Statement by Bayan Sami Abdul RahmanKurdistan Regional GovernmentRepresentative to the United States of America
Washington DC, USA (www.us.krd.gov) – Some of my recent comments on the role of the United States in the fight against ISIS and the cooperation between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the US Administration have been taken out of context and misrepresented by some media channels. This has created an unbalanced and distorted picture.
I am always clear that we are grateful to the government and people of America for providing vital support to the Kurdistan Region through airstrikes and other support, as well as for leading in the delivery of humanitarian aid to the millions who have been displaced in Iraq and Syria.
The Kurdistan Regional Government and the leadership of the Region are appreciative of the vital role of the United States in the fight against ISIS. Its airstrikes in August 2014 and since have been essential to stopping the advance of ISIS and to helping the Peshmerga to retake territory from the terrorist organization. With the help of the US-led airstrikes and other support, Peshmerga forces have retaken control of 95 percent of Kurdistani territory that was lost to ISIS last summer.
We are grateful to the United States for leading the international coalition against ISIS and the support and solidarity it continues to show to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. We are committed to continue working with the US government in all fields, particularly in the fight against international terrorism.
